Extending Battery Life Through Intelligent Power Management on Datalogic Mobile Devices

Enterprise deployments of mobile computers face ongoing challenges with battery degradation, particularly in environments where devices remain on chargers for extended periods or experience intensive usage patterns. Capacity loss, battery deterioration and premature replacement cycles directly impact total cost of ownership and operational efficiency.

To address these challenges, Datalogic has introduced two complementary battery management features: Smart Charge and Enterprise Battery Saver. These features provide fleet managers and system integrators with advanced tools to optimize battery longevity while maintaining operational readiness.

Both features are accessible through the device UI under Datalogic Settings / Battery Management / Battery Optimization and can be configured remotely via OEMConfig and Scan2Deploy for large-scale deployments.

Smart Charge: Intelligent Charging Scheduling

Smart Charge optimizes battery charging patterns based on work schedules, reducing the time batteries spend at full charge—a primary contributor to battery degradation.

Key Capabilities

  • Work Schedule Configuration: Define daily or per-day work time windows when a fully charged device is required
  • Optimized Charging Ramp: The system maintains battery at a safe charge level (typically 80%) and performs the final charge ramp to 100% just before the configured work time begins
  • Discharge Management: After extended periods at full charge, the feature automatically discharges the battery to a safer maintenance level
  • Wireless Charging Protection: On wireless charging cradles, implements charge/discharge cycles when device temperature exceeds safe thresholds to prevent overheating

Smart Charge can be configured through the following settings:

  • Enable/Disable: Activate the Smart Charge feature
  • Discharge Delay: Maximum time (30 to 1440 minutes) the battery remains at full charge before managed discharge begins
  • Work Schedule: Configure start/end times for each day of the week, or set a universal daily schedule

Example Configuration: For a warehouse operation with shifts from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Smart Charge would maintain devices at 80% overnight, then complete charging to 100% by 8:00 AM, ensuring devices are ready for the work shift while minimizing time spent at full charge.

Enterprise Battery Saver: Conditional Performance Profiles

Enterprise Battery Saver extends Android's native Battery Saver with enterprise-specific profiles that automatically adjust device behavior based on operational conditions.

Each Profile can reduce battery consumption operating on different device subsystems.

  • CPU/GPU Frequency Limits: Control processor performance to reduce power consumption
  • Screen Brightness: Adaptive or reduced brightness settings
  • Connectivity Management: Selective disable of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, cellular, or location services
  • Network Throttling: Set maximum download rate limits
  • Application Control: Blacklist specific applications from running while profile is active

Enterprise Battery Saver can activate specific profiles basing on flexible activation conditions (Activation Items):

  • Battery Level: Activate a profile when charge falls below a specified percentage
  • Power Source: Apply a profile when connected to specific charge sources (wired cradle, wireless cradle, USB)
  • Network Connection: Trigger on specific connection types
  • Time Interval: Apply different profiles during specified days and time ranges
  • Pocket Mode: Activate when device detects it's in a pocket or covered
  • Always On: Default profile when no other conditions are met

Finally, the Ignore Power Source setting allows Enterprise Battery Saver profiles to remain active even when the device is charging, enabling consistent behavior during specific operational scenarios (e.g., maintaining reduced connectivity during overnight charging).

Configuration and Deployment

Both features can be configured through:

  1. Device UI: Datalogic Settings / Battery Management / Battery Optimization
  2. OEMConfig: Full parameter exposure for EMM integration
  3. Scan2Deploy: Deploy configurations via barcode scanning during staging

For detailed OEMConfig parameter definitions and configuration examples, refer to the official Datalogic OEMConfig documentation OEMConfig - Smart Charge Documentation.

Use Case Examples

Retail Store - Mixed Usage Patterns

  • Configure Smart Charge with store hours (9 AM - 9 PM)
  • Enterprise Battery Saver can activates aggressive power saving after 10 PM
  • Devices maintain 80% charge overnight, complete charge by 8:30 AM
  • Result: Extended battery life, devices ready for opening

Warehouse - 24/7 Operation with Shift Rotation

  • Multiple Enterprise Battery Saver profiles for day/night shifts
  • Profile switches automatically based on time intervals
  • Smart Charge disabled for continuous availability
  • Result: Optimized performance per shift, controlled power consumption

Healthcare - Device Sharing with Frequent Charging

  • Smart Charge prevents overcharging between patient rounds
  • Enterprise Battery Saver reduces connectivity during charging to minimize heat
  • Discharge management prevents battery swelling on shared charging stations
  • Result: Healthier batteries, reduced device temperature, extending the useful life of batteries

Best Practices

  • Combine Both Features: Use Smart Charge for charging optimization and Enterprise Battery Saver for operational power management
  • Profile Testing: Test Enterprise Battery Saver profiles in controlled environments before fleet-wide deployment
  • Temperature Monitoring: On wireless charging installations, Smart Charge's temperature-based protection helps prevent overheating
  • Work Schedule Accuracy: Configure Smart Charge work times to match actual operational requirements, allowing adequate advance time for charging
  • Connectivity Requirements: Ensure Enterprise Battery Saver profiles don't disable connectivity when required for critical applications
